DIY Wood Floor Cleaner
We all love a clean, shiny hardwood floor that brings out the grain and color in our Santa Clarita home. The trouble with many commercial wood floor cleaners is that they either contain harsh chemicals or wax that builds up. The chemicals will begin to wear down the protective floor finish and may be hazardous to toddlers and pets. The waxy cleaners build up sticky layers over time that hold dirt and impart a dull look to the floor.
Many people are turning to more a natural approach that is safe for your family and the environment, and they cost less. Here are a few simple recipes for hardwood floor cleaners that you can try:
Basic Citrus Cleaner
Vinegar and water will clean just about anything. Adding essential citrus oils will help cut through the build-up and leave a pleasant fragrance. Use 1 part warm water to 1 part vinegar and add up to 15 drops of essential orange or lemon oil. Any leftover can be used to clean countertops, tile, and, glass surfaces.
If your floors are especially grimy, and you have children, try this recipe to clean and disinfect your surfaces. Mix 8 cups of hot water with 1/3 cup of castile soap. Add 5 drops each of essential eucalyptus, peppermint, and lavender oil. You will want to rinse the floor after to remove the soap. You can add drops of lavender oil into the rinsing water to leave a fresh scent.
Polishing & Restorative Cleaner
Your floors may need a boost that leaves it shiny and restored. Mix 8 cups of warm water with 1/3 cup of olive oil and 1/4 cup of fresh lemon juice. After mopping the floor, just leave the solution to dry. The oil will add sheen.
